Starrett # 644-441 Dial Indicator Depth Gage: 0.001" graduations, 1.00" travel

Description

Used Starrett Model # 644-441 Dial Indicator, Drop Reading, Depth Gage. The indicator has 0.001" graduations, and 1.00" of travel.  Note: this is a special indicator designed to be used with the base, as a set. The indicator has its numbers reading higher, or positive, in a counterclockwise rotation.  This is an useful instrument for reading the drop, or distance from the base of part features. You set the indicator so it reads "zero" when the tip is fully retracted flush with the base, set it to zero by holding it against a flat surface (surface plate, see pic). Now, as the spindle moves down and out from the base, the indicator reads the distance from the bottom of the base. Note it has a second counter hand reading every 0.100". So it is basically a "drop reading" gage. For everything to work correctly, the tip must be appx 0.500" long.  This instrument will measure drops to about 1.06". Nice Starrett build quality.
