Renowned playback singer Shreya Ghoshal, who had earlier cancelled her Kolkata concert, has joined the protest against the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Hospital by unveiling a new song in the city to address the growing issue of violence against women.
Ghoshal sang the protest song at a concert at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata as part of the “All Hearts Tour” organised by ISHQ FM in collaboration with the India Today Group.
Before performing the song, Ghoshal urged the audience not to applaud afterward, but rather to reflect on its deeper message.
In her moving performance, she sang, “E Je Sorirer Chitkar”, which translates to “The scream of this body, you will hear it today,” underscoring the pain and suffering faced by victims of such horrific crimes.
The concert, which drew a large crowd, became viral as videos of her performance quickly circulated on social media.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh praised Shreya Ghoshal’s performance and wrote on X, “She is concerned about RG Kar like all of us. She postponed her program. She talked about women’s safety all over India and the world. Protest is necessary against rape and murder”.
Earlier, Ghoshal took to X and said that the rape and murder of the 31-year-old trainee doctor in Kolkata had deeply affected her. “As a woman, I am shocked by the brutality of the incident. It gives me goosebumps to think of the torture the victim had to endure,” she had said.
Earlier, popular singer Arijit Singh had also expressed his outrage over the rape through a protest song, “Aar Kobey” (if not now, then when), which emerged as an anthem of sorts amid massive protests over the doctor’s rape-murder.
